I get asked many times how we come up with ideas for our projects. Many times we are inspired by the books we are reading. For example we have been inspired by The Dot, Spookely the Square Pumpkin and The Gift of Nothing.
It is very unusual for me to highlight a children’s book that has NO pictures. However, I saw the author reading the book in a video on Youtube and I knew that Lil B (5 years old) would love it.

“The Book With No Pictures” written by B.J. Novak is Lil B’s new favorite book. I was right he loves it and I love to create projects based on his interests. So while this book is not a holiday book I knew we had to use this as part of the Kid Made Ornament series on Mama Miss. I highly recommend checking this book out or at least watch the video (which we have included for your viewing pleasure).
Inspired by the book we created our own silly mini ornament book with no pictures. We put a holiday spin on it by focusing on words that describe the sounds of Christmas. We brainstormed different sounds we hear during the holidays and what kind of words we use to describe the sounds (onomatopoeia words like ding, dong, ring-a-ling, ho, ho, ho). Lil B and M-Woww proceeded to create their own silly story based on the words we brainstormed. Read below for our tutorial.

Marker or Pen
Step 1: Decide the size of your journal based on your paint chips. Cut two paint chips the same size.
Step 2: Trim sticky notes to the size of your cut paint chip. Fill with as many sticky notes as you need.
Step 3: Line up paint chips and sticky note paper and punch 2 holes along the left edge.
Step 4: Cut a piece of ribbon and place through the holes and tie.
Step 5: Add your story to the journal.
Lil B was so proud to write his own story and hang it on the tree. I was happy to see him so excited about writing!
