Halloween is a spooky time of year but it does not have to be “scary” for your preschooler. We have been inspired by wonderful Owl crafts we have seen on Pinterest, like this paper plate owl or these paper pumpkin owls. We wanted to make our own. Our version is fun and easy, a perfect halloween craft for kids. We used coffee filters to catch the glow from the sun when hung in the window. Read our tutorial below.
Owl fun fact: Did you know they can turn their head as much as 270 degrees? Whoa!
3 Coffee Filters
Paint Daubers or Watercolor Paint
Step 1: Paint all 3 coffee filters and let dry. Be sure to cover your work surface, the paint will bleed through the coffee filter. We used a plastic tablecloth that makes for easy clean up.
Step 2: While your coffee filters are drying, cut your shapes for the eyes, beak and feet out of construction paper. We used circle shapes for the eyes and a triangle for the beak. To create the feet we drew the letter m and then cut around it.
Step 3: Chose one dry coffee filter for the owl body. Glue your eyes, beak and feet to the coffee filter. Add squiggly lines to the body to imitate feathers on the body.
Step 4: Cut a second coffee filter in half. Glue to the first coffee filter as the wings. Turn the owl over and trim the wings with scissors.
Step 5: Using the third coffee filter cut triangle shapes for the owl ears and large size circles to glue behind the eyes.
Step 6: Hang and display! By using a coffee filter it creates a beautiful sun catcher when hung in the window.
